Are you heading to Barcelona for a short city break or a longer summer holiday? We highly recommend a visit to the Montserrat mountain on our small group hiking tour. We will pick you up at 8:30 am centrally in front of the Hard Rock Cafe in Barcelona and head directly to the famous monastery of Montserrat. From a far distance, you will be able to spot the unusual shape of the Montserrat mountain range, which was declared a natural park in 1987.
The surrounding valleys often fill up with thick fog in the winter, thus our arrival to the sacred mountain in the winter months may truly be a mysterious experience. The Montserrat mountain attracts many outdoor enthusiasts all year round. It offers unlimited walking opportunities, spectacular rock climbing walls and great views in every direction. Make sure you don’t miss out on this fantastic outdoor activity when visiting Barcelona.
After a brief explanation of the route, we will embark on our gentle hiking tour around the mountain, whilst admiring amazing views. Our first viewpoint will be at Saint Miquel cross. This place offers fantastic views of the Montserrat monastery, Pyrenees, the Natural Park Saint Llorenc and Mediterranean sea south of Barcelona. Our circular route will lead us to several hermitages, where monks use to live and retire in the past.
We will also pass by the largely pointed spears and rounded rocks that resemble certain animals and characters. With a guessing game and with a little bit of imagination, you will identify the rocks. We will also observe the typical Mediterranean vegetation characterized by dense oak tree forest, wild box bushes, and aromatic herbs. If we are lucky, we will spot the iconic wild goat of Montserrat or a vulture gliding on the ascending hot air while searching for its prey. We may also stumble across places, where wild boards were rooting in the soil. They normally search for underground food items such as roots, insects or mas. The small group hiking tour in Montserrat will give you the opportunity to fully experience the marvels of this Natural Park and actively explore its wonders.
At the end of our best value hiking tour, we will visit the famous Benedictine monastery with “la moreneta”—the black virgin lady. Her appearance and later proclamation by powerful bishop Abbat Oliba resulted in the birth of the monastery. You will hear about the legends this sacred place holds and the 1000 years long history. After having spent a fantastic and active morning in Montserrat, learning about the vegetation, local animals and history we will try some delicious locally produced cheeses from the farmers that live around the mountain. You will have an opportunity to try several different goats and cow cheeses and the local specialty called a fig bread.
Nicely tired from hiking around the Montserrat mountain and filled with beautiful outdoor experiences we will return to our meeting point in the center of Barcelona. The small group hiking tour in Montserrat is one of the most exciting outdoor activities near Barcelona. The entire experience will take about six and a half hours. You can make plans for the rest of the day as we will bring you back to our starting point around 3 pm.
*We also tailor make private tours to Montserrat for groups of friends, business trips and families. Please get in touch if you have any special requirement and we will happily do our best to satisfy your traveling needs.

It was awersome trip. Stepan is really friendly and nice. This tour was the most vivid and memorable event. Since the morning it was a little rainy, but when we arrived from the monastery it became sunny. The view that opened .. it is impossible to describe in words. The road was not difficult, we talked all the time and Stepan told amazing stories about nature and the monastery. I was so charmed that sometimes I could not even find words to express my emotions. It is important to note that Stepan is very attentive to physical training and, depending on it, chooses a route. We also visited the observation deck of Miranda de Santa Magdalena. It’s amazing!!! The path to it was more complicated than the rest of the route, but on difficult stretches Stepan helped to climb or to go down. The monastery was impressed with its monumentality. It is unfortunate that I can not attach photos to a review – they are fascinating! Also, Stepan gave a lot of advices that I should visit and see in Barcelona. Stepan, thank you very much for your emotions and amazing excursion. It will remain in my memory and my heart forever !!
