Costa Brava

Costa Brava is a coastal region located in the northeastern part of Catalonia, Spain.

A Day Trip to Costa Brava from Barcelona

The name “Costa Brava” translates to “Wild Coast” or “Rough Coast” in English, reflecting the rugged and picturesque nature of its landscape made mainly of sandrock, and granitic rock formation.  The region stretches along the Mediterranean Sea, from the town of Blanes, which is situated to the northeast of Barcelona, to the French border. You can reach Blanes by train from Barcelona using R1 line running along the Maresme coastline.

Costa Brava is known for its stunning beaches, hidden coves, crystal-clear waters, and charming seaside towns which remained widely undiscovered until the start of the 60s. The landscape is a mix of rocky cliffs, pine forests, and sandy beaches with coarse sand or pebbles. It is a popular destination for locals as well as Western Europeans (Germans, Dutch, French, etc..) seeking both natural beauty and recreational activities from the Easter holidays until the end of the season at the end of October. It is a perfect day trip from Barcelona for anyone excited to explore Catalonia.

Some notable and touristy towns along the Costa Brava include the fortified Tossa de Mar, long-known party places Lloret de Mar, Dali’s favorite Cadaqués, and Roses amongst others. There are dozens of other smaller picturesque towns in Costa Brava that require a vehicle to be able to visit them for a day.

Exploring Costa Brava’s Beach Towns: Sun, Sand, and Culture

Apart from its natural attractions, Costa Brava also has a rich culture dating back to Iberian settlements and Roman villages. The historical heritage, with medieval villages, ancient ruins, and museums is awaiting you to explore while you are in Empordà region little over an hour’s drive from Barcelona. We recommend exploring the following sites if you are looking forward to combining the beach time with history:

Santa Helena de Rodes Chapel

San Pedro de Rodes Monastery

Lighthouse of Cap de Creus

Empúries ruins

Montgrí Castle

Cap Roig Castle

San Esteban de Mar Castle

Tossa de Mar Fortress

Castle in Lloret

Marimurtra Botanical Gardens

The region has been a popular destination for tourists from around the world, offering a diverse range of experiences, from beach relaxation, and water sports to outdoor activities by the Mediterranean Sea. For those looking into a coastal hiking experience, the Costa Brava entails a long-distance trail called El Camino de Ronda or ‘Sendero del Mediterráneo’ signposted with white and red stripes (GR 92). The route runs partially on the coastline and the interior of the region. Some sections are not well maintained and are fenced up by newly built luxury villas or housing complexes.

Vineyards of Costa Brava: A Wine Lover’s Paradise

The Empordà DO (Designation of Origin) wines are characterized by the proxy of the Pyrenees to the North and by the  Mediterranean Sea to the East. The wineries offer a great variety of wines. The red wines are high quality, full-bodied, and well-structured with a local specialty called the Garnatxa de l´Emporda, a naturally sweet wine produced from the Garnacha grape. The first wine-making culture reached Catalonia around the 6th century BC when the Empordà region was the most important Greek colony in the Iberian peninsula.

Costa Brava Kayaking Adventures: Discover Hidden Coves and Marine Life

Spending a full day in Costa Brava is a must if you have an extra free day in Barcelona. Some of the best-secluded bays and beaches can be reached by foot following the GR92 trail or by a sea kayak. We also recommend packing a diving mask to be able to explore the transparent blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea that provide a natural habitat for some exciting marine life.
